<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">地方のターミナル駅くらいの路線数―――大体１０番線くらいまであるうちの一つに降りたったあなたは、停車中の車両に添って歩く。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">目指すは改札口に通じるホーム下の連絡通路。乗降する忙しない人の流れに気を遣いながら、やがて下り階段にたどりつく。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">階段を降りると、そこが連絡通路で、両脇に各種テナントを見送りながら、あなたはひたすらに進む。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">連絡通路なんて、大概は色気のない淡白な色調と造りだし、テナントだって飲食店とか雑貨屋とかいろいろあると見せかけて、実際はありきたりで他でも見られる没個性的なものばかり。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そういう延々と同じ場所を歩いてるような気分にさせる通路をしばらく歩いて、改札に到着する。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">改札の向こう側で、待ち合わせしてる人達が寄りかかる柱には、駅と半分繋がってるデパートの化粧品店なんかが広告を出してたりする。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">他にも、まあそれなりに整って、けどやっぱりゴチャゴチャとしたいろんな広告が見えると思う。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">或いはあなたに注意力があれば、広告に埋もれて意識の外に締め出された、駅そのものの装飾が見つかるかもしれない。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">陽の当たる広場があって―――出入口の脇にシュークリーム屋さんがあるけど、お金があるなら買ってもいいと思う。おいしいから。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">で、その先には結構広めのバスロータリー。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">円形のバスロータリーは背の高い建物――ビルが多いのはオフィス街とかの方で、方向によっては昭和っぽいモダンでくすんだ建物もいっぱいあるから。奥の方なんかは蔓草に一面覆われた・・・・・・</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">けど、まあ、当然の話だけど。全部囲まれてるってわけじゃなくて、半分くらいの空間は通りがあって建物はないわ。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">ここであなたは学園行きのバスに乗り込んで、いくつかある駅前大通りのうちの一つを行く。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">しばらくはいろいろとお店が並んでて、歩道を歩いてる人も多いけど、通りを抜けたらすぐに普通の街並に変わるはず。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">人によっては田舎って言うかもしれないわね。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">でもそれは駅前の方がいろいろと栄えてるってだけ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">ガラっと変わる風景は街が調子を切り替えたんだってことを伝えてる。そもそも学校の周りって静かな方がいいし。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">ただ、あなたには、学園行きバスの停車場に並ぶ前に少し寄り道をしてほしい。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">他と比べると単純な直線で構成されてて、つき出た看板も宙に何本も線を引く電線も見当たらない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">空が道の先に向かって収束しているように見える程、人間的な雑然さが感じられないオフィス街。そこを行ってほしい。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">旅行者や一般人には面白みのない、会社ばかりが並ぶ通りだけど、我慢して進んでみて。ちょっと行くと左に曲がる道があるから。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">ちょうど駅前繁華街の周りに広がる住宅街へ向かう感じ。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">買っていく１００円本の種類は、節操がなく、前回純文学を買っていったかと思うと、今度はバブル時代の古い女性誌を買っていくことも。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">好みが良く分からない少女だったりする。ただそれも、あまり物事に固執しない性格ゆえなのだろう。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">何度も会話を交わしているうちに分かった、そんな彼女の性格を、店主はそれなりに好ましく思っていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">今は店の真ん中にある本棚の前で大人しく本を読んでいる。たまに髪をかきあげるが、しぐさが整っていて美しい。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">実際には少年というより青年と言った方がしっくりくる顔立ちの彼も、斜め後ろの少女と同じくらいの頻度でやってくる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">どうも受験生らしく、この店に来た理由も古い参考書を探しての様であった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">ただ最近定位置が変わった事から、店主は彼の受験が終わったのだと考えていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">取り立てて特徴のない容姿の彼をしかし、店主が奥にあげる事はあまりない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">彼がリピーターになった経緯故か。単純に男と女という関係のため、少女に対するほどの気安さがないからなのか。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">まあ男女の隔たりと言うのなら、彼女の店にもっとも頻繁に出入りしている客が男性なのだから、あまり関係ないのかもしれないが。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">よく見かける間柄であっても、古本屋と言う半ば没交渉な場では、こんなにも意思が伝わりにくいのだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そもそも、最も頻繁に来店していて交わす会話も多い、半ば従業員のような扱いを受けている常連の青年からして、何故来ているかの理由はあやふやであった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">各々がこの場にいる理由は、各々だけが真に理解していれば良い事だし、本人でさえ解っていなくとも、それはそれでおかしな事だとは店主は思わない。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">おそらくは常連やリピーターになることそのものが、『気が付いたら』なっていた場合が大半なのだろう。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">と、散乱した小物の中に未開封の煙草の箱があるのに気付く。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">手にとってみれば「ＭＩＬＤ」のＭがＷになったマイルドセブンのコピー商品だった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">女店主は小さく鼻を鳴らす。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">タバコはいつだったか、常連の青年に買わせたものだった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">今となっては良く覚えていないが、記憶では確か、戯れに負けた方が勝った方の言うことを聞くと言うルールでオセロか将棋をさし、その褒賞として青年を使いっぱしりにした時の事だった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">丁度タバコをが切れていたので、『一丁駅前大通りまで言って買ってこいっ』と指図したのがいけなかった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">いや、むしろその際に、あれこれと細かく指示を与えたのが問題の本質なのだろう。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">頼みの品とは似ても似つかぬ奇妙な一品を持ってきた青年に彼女が問いただすと、『店主さんの言ったようなモノなんてっ、ありませんでしたよっ』なんて返されてしまった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">憮然とした口調からすると、彼女が『有りもしない物を要求して、駅前を駆けずりまわせて笑いものにしようとしている』
と誤解したのかもしれない。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">やがておもむろに薄いプラスチックの包装を開けると、シガレットを取り出しくわえる。</span></div>
