<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">心の読める私には、男さんから否応なしに流れ込んでくる。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">以前</span><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">、放課後の昇降口で、飼育委員の仕事を終えた同僚君を引き止め、話をしていた男さん。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">私が現れたことで男さんが少し動揺し、その変化を感じ取った同僚君もこちらを振り向いてきた。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">同僚君は少し眉をひそめながら、私の通称を口にする。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">先ほどまで殺伐とした会話をしていた為か、さしもの彼も、私の読心を拒絶しきれないみたいだった。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">確かに中学時代の二人に起こった出来事や、それ以降の変化といった細かい出来事は男さん側の視点でしかわからなかった。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">同僚君の心はそういった部分に関しては相変わらず、鉄壁といえるほどの頑なさである。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">けど、それでも同僚君からは、『先ほどまでの顛末』と『思いがけない人物の登場』による動揺が確かに伝わってきた。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">それは、彼の向こう側で立ちすくむ男さんと比べれば、空気の澄んだ冬の空と夏場の霧の夜ほどの違いはあったけど。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">先程、飼育小屋へ向かう前に一度通った際、ここで通訳をしたけれど、その時とは全く印象を変えてしまったこの空間を見て、彼は何を思っているのだろう？</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">たまたま通りがかったに過ぎない私が、事の顛末を理解して、且つその際の男さんの心の動きまでも見えてしまった。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">それ程、あの怒号には多くのモノが含まれていた。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">理由も定かではない同僚君の変化に対する戸惑いと苦しみ、</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">イジメを止めようともしなかった自分への罪悪感。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">どれほど時が経っても修復されない関係への疲労。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt 17.95pt;text-indent:-8pt;" align="left">
<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">それを跳ね除けてでも何とかしたい想い。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt 17.95pt;text-indent:-8pt;" align="left">
<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">何としてでも旅行に連れて行く。そこですべて終わらせるという決意。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そして、そんな彼の決意さえも無意味に終わらせてしまう現実の理不尽さ。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">それに対する深い深い絶望と憤り。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">人間の心が複雑な理由の一つに、本心を直接伝えると摩擦が生じてしまう、といったことがある。　</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">だから、そうそう人間の言動は本心と一致したりしない。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">私も含めて、誰だって意味もなく人とぶつかり合うのは嫌なのだ。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">男さんもその例に漏れない。漏れないどころか彼は、人一倍その傾向が強いように思う。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">割とクラスの中で親しまれているのは、そういう所があるからなのだろう。彼が自分の意見をはっきり言ってる所は、あまり見たことがない。　</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">男さんの心には耐え難いほどの、胸を焼くような、臓腑を無理矢理下に引っ張られるような苦しみが満ちていた。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">ぶつかり合うことも覚悟で、傷だらけになることも覚悟で、勝負に出たはずなのに、現実は戦うことさえ許してくれない。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">襲い来る障害を半ば命を賭して乗り越えはしたけれど、総身萎え精も根も尽き果て、そして道半ばで全て投げ出してしまう。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">それと、胸の奥をかすかにチクチクと刺激し続ける幻のような罪悪感。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">私はそんな男さんの強い心の動きを認識しながら、現代文の授業でやった太宰治の小説の事を思い出していた。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">『通訳』にとっては、それが普通だった。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">心を読めるから、人のいろいろな感情が伝わってくる。</span></div>

<span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">それにいちいち同調していると、気が狂ってしまう。</span></div>
