<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">シンパシーを感じた彼女は、現実の影であり実在しない。本質はただの情報で、さらに突き詰めれば紙とインクという媒体に過ぎない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">対してシンパシーを感じる私は、実在する人間だと言うのに。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">或いは、現実に存在する人間の生もまた、造られた物語と変わらない胡蝶の夢という事なのだろうか？</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そんな哲学的な思考にまで至りながらも、架空の少女が行き着いたのと同じ地点に自分が着地してしまったのが酷くおかしかった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">現実と空想が転倒してしまった事実が、酷く滑稽で、そして愉快で。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">切れ切れに耳に届く教室内のざわめきもまた、普段とはそこはかとない相違を見せていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">『サインコサインタンジェント』と歌うように繰り返す少女の声。『アベ公房のアベは安倍か阿部か』という冗談めいた少年達の問い。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そんな個々の構成要素を、川面から飛び上がる魚のように時たま顕わにしながらも、一個の湧き立つ雲としてざわめきは空気中に満ちていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">二月も後半を迎え、だんだんと季節が暖かくなり始めている。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">にも関わらず、それまでと何一つ変わることなく午後もストーブが稼働している教室内は、空気がこもり熱いほどであった。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">無意識に顔にかかった髪を払い、頭髪を整えながら彼女―――友人やクラスメイトや飼育委員の同僚から『通訳』と呼ばれている―――は一人赤面する。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">どうやら、ホームルームの間中、机に突っ伏した状態を一貫していたのに気付いたようであった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">周りが皆、立ち上がって挨拶をする中、麻雀の箱から一つだけ牌を抜き去ったみたいな穴の底で、微動だにしない自分の姿を想像したことで、顔に朱がさしてしまったという訳である。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">が、クラスの大半の顔が厚ぼったくむくんでいるのを見た事で、呟きは喉の奥へと呑み込まれていった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">麻雀の牌が抜けていた箇所は、一つではなかったのだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">彼女も含めてほとんど皆、テストを控え、連日睡眠時間を削っている真っ最中という事であった。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">教科書やノート類を、端に錆が浮き始めた金属製の机の中から取り出し、毎年使い回されて光沢の無くなった木製の天板の上でトントンと整える。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">次に、脇のフックにかかった革製の鞄とジャージの入った袋を机の上に出し、鞄の留め金を外す。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">開かれた鞄へ、教科書類を置くようにして緩やかな動作で彼女は入れた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">鞄を閉め、再び留め金を付けると、取っ手を両手で持って彼女は、くるりと机に背を向ける。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">その際に、長く伸びた黒髪が、さらりと空に踊る。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">暦の上では春であり実際にも寒さが和らぎつつある昼下がり、とはいえ、さすがに無人の室内ではその恩恵にもあずかれないらしい。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">キンと引き締まった空気が、十数分前までここを使用していたであろう人たちの、微かに残った諸々の匂いを織り込んで、鼻を刺激してくる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">物悲しくなるような匂いの中に人の気配を嗅ぎ取れる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">私はそんな更衣室の空気に体を震わせつつ、着替えの出来るスペースを探し始める。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">半開きのロッカーからはみ出した衣服や私物は、奥の窓からしみ込むような光が覆う床の、大半を侵食していた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">私達飼育委員は、飼育小屋の掃除という仕事内容の関係上、基本的にジャージに着替える事になっている。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">なので更衣室の使用が認められているのだけれど、印象的には、運動系の部活が所有する更衣室を『使わせてもらっている』と言った方が正しいように思う。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">事実、更衣室は男女両方共に、運動系の部活が主要な使用者であった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">持ち帰らなければならない筈の彼等の私物も常時置かれていて、それが学校側にも半ば黙認されているのが現状である。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">ただ別に、その事について不満や反感があるわけではない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">それはもはや、昔からの慣習になっていて、今更正そうとしても学校や生徒会に余計な仕事を増やすだけなのだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">それに、毎日使っているのに、その度ごとに持ちかえらなければならないというのも、激しい運動で体を疲労させいる部員達には酷な話だろう。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">だから少なくとも私自身には、それに私の見る限り飼育委員会自体にも、この『間借りさせてもらっている』現状をどうこうしようという意識は無かった。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">更衣室に入って一分ほどして、奥の壁とロッカーの列が直角に交わる地点に、若干の空きを見つける。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">背後の出入口の鍵を閉めると、泥棒が抜き足差し足をするように、床を彩る雑誌や脱ぎ散らかされた制服なんかを避けて、慎重に移動を開始した。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">やがてどうにかして、部屋の隅っこの貴重な床の露出部へとたどり着き、着替えを始める。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">制服を脱ぎつつ、器用にも立ったままそれらを畳み、床におろした袋へジャージと入れ替わりに詰め込みながら、私は酷く落ち着かない気分だった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">飼育委員は仕事の時間の都合上、昼の時間を除けば、朝も放課後も、運動系の部活の人たちが着替えた後に更衣室を使用している。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">しかも飼育小屋の仕事は男女二人一組であるため、一日で最も散らかった状態の更衣室で、たった一人で着替えなければいけないのだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">それはまるで、無許可でこっそりと忍び込んでいるような錯覚を覚える行動であった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">別に悪い事をしている訳でもないのに、なんだか自分が場違いな存在に思えて、更衣室そのものがこちらを拒否している気がしてくる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">着替えの時間はそんな気分にさせられるのだ。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">少し長めのジャージの足もとを整えた後、スカートのホックを外して脱ぎ、上と同様に畳んで袋に入れた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">思考は、飼育委員の同僚の少年に至った事で、ここ最近に起こった一連の出来事の記憶を呼び覚まし始めた。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">同僚君と男さんの関係は、私達の懸念や緊張をよそに、意外なほどにあっさりと回復した。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">自分が全面的に悪いという同僚君の態度に、男さんの中にあったわだかまりが、ほとんど瞬間的に解消されたのが大きかったに違いない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">表面上は『お前の方から切っといて、ずいぶん勝手だな』なんて言いながらも、男さんにの心には仲直り以外の選択肢が存在していなかった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">結局、ほとんど何の障害もなく、同僚君は男さんに受け入れられるに到った。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">やはり私の睨んだ通り、どんな風になろうとも男さんは、同僚君と元の関係に戻りたい、というのが本音だったようだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">お互いに理解しあえない、という気持ちから距離をとっていた同僚君が、これからどうなるかは解らないけど。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">私は来たときと同じ経路をたどって、散らかった更衣室を出入り口へ向かった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">最後に、しっかりとした金属性の造りの扉に添え付けられた鏡で、全身をチェックする。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">鏡の中で、十数年付き合ってきた自分の姿が、頭に手をやり髪を整えていた。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">自分が心の底で人を拒んできたと気付いても、原因は生まれた時からの読心能力と幼い頃から無意識のうちに続けてきた行動にあるのだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">フワフワと現実感のない感覚は性根に染み付いてしまっていて、そう簡単に変えることができない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">結局、相も変わらず私は、たまに強い感情が流れ込んでくればそれを通訳し、その他は心を読んで行動を選択するだけの日々を続けていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">それがあまり健全ではないと解ってしまった今でも、特に何かをしようとは思えない。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">昇降口から外の広場に出ると、校舎内の影が消え去った明るい光に包まれる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">私はそこに、同僚君がいるのに気がついた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">広場の中心にある、花で造られた半ば芸術的なオブジェが立つ花壇の周りを、ブラブラと歩いている。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">こちらに気付いた彼が軽く手をあげて、挨拶する。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">意外な彼の行動に、意図が掴めずちょっと動揺しながら、そう尋ねる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">彼は、『ん』と短い肯定の返事をしたのち、『行くか』と花壇から離れて歩き始めた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;"><span style="font-size:10pt;">私もそれを受けて彼と歩調を合わせる。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;"><font color="#000000">そんな哲学的な思考にまで至りながらも、架空の少女が行き着いたのと同じ地点に自分が着地してしまったのが酷くおかしかった。</font></span></div>
