<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">先ほど『クシャッ』としていた人が一瞬非難がましい目をこちらに向けたが、すぐまた本に目を戻すのが見えた。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">「空の境界、空の境界、空の境界・・・・・・ねえ。ま、求める物の違いよね。面白いか否か、なんて。」</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">彼女は指の間の本を一定のリズムで振りながら、誰に向かって言うでもなく呟く。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">どこか遠い目で彼女が空に放ったその言葉は、こちらがドキリとするような深い声で紡がれていた。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">ふいっ、と本を振る動きを止めてカウンターの上に置くと、今度ははっきりと私に向かってそう言ってきた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">「そ、そうですか、、、それは良かったです。」</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">私は、内心ホッとしながらそう返す。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">先程女店主さんに促された私は、サトリさんと淡白な少女が「空の境界」を、はっきり『面白くない』と言ったこと。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そのせいで自分の感性はおかしいのではないか、と不安な心中を吐露した。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">同僚君のことに関しては話していない。言っても意味はないと思うし、言ってしまってあれこれ詮索されるのも面倒だったから。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">私の話に対して店主さんは、作品にはある程度の理解を示す形で応えてくれた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">彼女にまで『「空の境界」はつまらない』と言われるのではないかと、ドギマギしながら話していた私にとっては幾分救いになる反応であった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">「空の境界」を知っている人の中では、今日初めて肯定的な意見を言ってくれた。それは素直に嬉しかった。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">店主さんの言葉に私は首をかしげた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">『科学の発達の弊害』とはどういう事だろうか？</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">『価値観の多様化』というのはなんとなくわかる気もするけど、それが何故『科学の発達の弊害』になるのだろう？繋がりがいまいち掴めない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">気になったので彼女の心を読もうとする。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">が、自分の湯呑から冷めたお茶をすする彼女は、私が心を読むより先に説明を始めてしまった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">口を開くのに合わせて、空の湯呑がカウンターの黒い板の上に接触する『コトリ』という音が聞こえた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">「ん、良く分からない？そうか。よろしい。ならば説明しよう。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">地域共同体の崩壊、とか。昔は隣三軒両隣だったけど、今は隣で幼児虐待や家庭内暴力、果ては殺人事件なんかがあっても知らんぷりだ、とか。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">あれさ、全部科学技術が発達したからなのよね。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">科学技術が発達するって事はつまり、生きていくのが簡単になるって事。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">トラクターやコンバインのおかげで食糧生産率は飛躍的に高まり、医療機器や医学の発達はかつての不治の病を風邪と同じ次元にまで貶めた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">自動車や飛行機なんかの輸送手段の発達は言わずもがな・・・ああ、そうそう。救急車なんかも人命救助に一役買ってるわね。それを呼ぶ電話も科学技術の賜物だし。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">ただそうなると社会システムの発達も考えなけりゃいけない、か・・・</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">まあでも『電話』っていう機械機構がなかったらそもそも呼べない訳だし、どっこいどっこいの表裏一体だわね。こりゃ」</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">まいったまいった、なんて軽口を叩きながら彼女は、自分の話の中途で湧いた疑問を自分で解決してしまった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">話している店主さんは、一体いつ息継ぎをしているのか判らないような喋り方をしていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">流れるように言葉を紡いでいるのは、学者が自らの考えをまとめるために独り言を言っているようにも見える。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">このままスラスラと、息継ぎらしい行為を挟まずに最後まで行ってしまうかとも思ったがどうやら彼女にもそういう行為は必要だったらしい。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">言葉を止めた店主さんはカウンターの上に手を伸ばし、湯呑のお茶に口をつける。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そうやって一口二口お茶を口に含んで湯呑を置くと、深く深く息を吐きだした。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">体全体を落とすようにするそれは、座り続けて淀んだ体内の『気』を特殊な呼吸法によって正常化している、といった印象を抱かせる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">或いは、体内の毒素を吐き出している、といった方が分かりやすいかも知れない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">長い長い吐息を終えると、彼女は髪を手櫛で軽く梳き再び口を動かし始めた。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">人間は以前よりもこの世に命をつなぎ止めやすくなった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">するとどうなるか？ここで最初の村落共同体うんぬんに戻ってくる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">いい？『自然』という物の半分は、残酷さ非情さで出来ている。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">弱肉強食ってあるでしょ？強きが弱きを喰らうって。あれの弱い者側にいるほうは悲惨でさ、ほとんど例外なく強い者に蹂躙されちゃうのね。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そこには一切の情けや善悪と言った庇護は存在しない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">人間はかつてそういった自然の掟から身内を守るために『社会』を生み出した。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">まあ、その他の動物にも『社会』ってのは見られるから、人間に進化するもっと以前からの話なのかもしれないが。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">とにもかくにも、だ。社会を守るには当然ながらルールが必要ね？</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">特に科学が今ほど発達していない時代には、彼ら自身の肉体に備わった力を勘定から外せば、実質的には社会の力だけで身を守っていたとも言える。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そうなると社会のを保つ『ルール』が強い拘束力を持つのは自然の成り行きってことね。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">当然個々の人格よりもまず『家』や『ムラ』と言った人の群体の維持が優先される。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">個人の勝手な事情に基づいた行動は許されないし、いざとなれば間引きや姥捨てのような非人道的な事も平然と行われる。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">『隣三軒両隣り』なんて概念はそういうシステムの良い面に着目したに過ぎない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">裏には『個』がないがしろにされるという暗黒面が厳然として存在しているというわけ」</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">少し難しい単語を含んではいたが、彼女の話には納得できるところがあった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">よく『昔は良かった』とか『今は世の中が冷たくなった』なんて言う人がいるけど、反面昔の世の中は自由が極端に制限されていたイメージもある。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">学校では日本史の時間に、村八分とか農村社会の暗く生々しい因習なんて話を先生が余談として語っていた。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">『暖かい人々のつながり』も『個人の自由』を犠牲にした上ではじめて成り立つことなのだろう。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">昔の世の中というのは失われたユートピアなどではなく、歴とした光陰両面を併せ持つ『現実』なのだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">『つながり』と『自由』、どちらが尊いのかは、私には判断できない事ではあるけど。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">「科学が発達すれば、そういった社会の力に頼らずとも生きていける。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">当然人格を否定するようなルールは却下。人柱も生贄も科学の力があれば必要ない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">そしてその結果起こるのが価値観の多様化ね。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">まあ当然と言えば当然か・・・昔は共同体を守る価値観以外は否定されていたけれど、その否定されていた部分がまるごと許容されるようになるんだから。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">彼女の放った発音を、ちゃんとした日本語として認識できなかった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">普通では聞かない様な言い回しに、それが自分の頭にある単語と同じモノなのか、一瞬疑ってしまったのだ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">それにしても『差別の差別』『排除の排除』『【ほかの価値観を認めない価値観】を認めなくなる』というのは深い言い方だ。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">一体どういう意味が含まれているのだろう？</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">眼前では店主さんの話がまだ続けられていたが、私の思考はそこから離れてしまった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">自分の中で店主さんの言葉に対する考察が始まってしまい、彼女の話に注意が割けなくなってしまったのだ。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">「数多ある考え方が認められるようになるわけだけど、その原則を崩す『特定の価値を認めない』という考え方だけは許されない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">価値観の許容は個人の自由とも言い換えられるけれども、つまりは他人の自由はいかなる理由があっても否定するのは適当では無くなってしまうのね。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">他人への干渉は許されない。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">ほら。だから隣人の幼児虐待は知らんぷりするべきなのよ。</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">彼女の話に再び注意を向けてみても、途中から聴いていなかったので何の話をしているのかよく分からなくなっている。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">思えば、言葉の意味が解らなければ店主さんの心を読めばいいだけの話だった。</span></div>
<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">心を読めばすぐ疑問は解消されるし、これから彼女が何を言いたいかもわかるはずだ・・・</span></div>

<div style="margin:0mm 0mm 0pt;text-indent:10pt;" align="left"><span style="font-size:10pt;color:#000000;">心を読んでも最早出てくる単語の意味が不明だし、ここまで来て『実は途中から訳が分からなくなってましたっ♪』なんて告げるのも店主さんに悪いような気がする。</span></div>
